Making Complexity Feel Simple

Mathias Willerup started working with computer design at a digital production house called Maczine Aps in the center of Copenhagen in 1992.

Being naturally curious about "how things work, what work, and how it could work better" he moved on to work as an interface designer in Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in 1995. Working amongst some of the best electronical engineers and computer scientists in the world, he was brought in as a 6 month experiment to try and "make things a bit more jazzy". He ended up staying for 4 years, learning immensily from the endless source of high-level, cutting edge projects. He established himself as a design expertise for numerous engineering teams, helping them visualizing complex ideas through usable design prototypes. Dedicated to "less is more", making complexity feel simple became an obsession.

In 1999 he joined Amazon.com to work as a UI designer for this web empire. In a quest to make the imense site, IMDb (owned by Amazon) easier to use, he spent 5 years working with a large international group of programmers, sales folks, editors and management trying to caretake everyones interest in the site. In addition to the interest of the business itself, it was his job to create a site that kept the dedication of an ever growing audience of passionate users.

Moving back to Denmark in 2004 he created his own company and worked for a number of Danish companies as a freelance consultant for 2 years which resulted in being employed by Bang & Olufsen in 2006, managing the user interaction department of B&O. This work resulted in a couple of breakthrough products for B&O, most high profile being the BeoSound 5 Music System. After 4½ years in B&O he moved back to Copenhagen now working for Microsoft Design.
